Wellness with Natalie: Feel up Yuhself Ladies

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as you'll have noticed, Loop has gone pink for the month to help raise awareness and funds for charity.

And to help inform our readers about the signs of breast cancer, how to check yourself and how to help prevent the disease through better lifestyle choices, our health and wellness adviser, Natalie Murray has been sharing some invaluable self-care information.

And this week, Natalie is advising us on regular breast massage.

Regular breast massage is important for a few reasons:

1. Normal breast tissue has lumps and bumps, especially if your breasts are fibrous. So with regular breast massage, you will learn what your boobies feel like.

2. Massage also stimulates the flow of lymph. Our lymphatic system is highly concentrated in the underarm and chest regions. Stimulating these areas helps keep this key detox mechanism running smoothly. You see, unlike our blood which has an organ (the heart) to pump it around our body, lymphatic fluid does not. When lymph isn't moving around as it should and it stagnates, problems can arise. Lymphatic fluid is part of our immune system and needs to flow through the lymph nodes to be filtered.

3. Through massage, you can apply certain oils that are beneficial to our cells. Also known as boswellia, frankincense contains a unique compound known as acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid, or AKBA for short. Scientific tests have determined that AKBA is a sworn enemy of cancer. With funding from the government of Oman, researchers from the University of Leicester were able to uncover how frankincense may be a safe and effective remedy for women who suffer from ovarian cancer. They also say that some cancer cells respond to frankincense when they don’t respond to chemo. (This is from https://breastcancer-news.com/pinterest/2016/09/29/essential-oils-for-breast-cancer/).

So here's how to make a breast balm:

In a clean glass jar, mix 1/2 cup sunflower oil and 1/2 cup coconut oil (if you cannot find sunflower oil then use 1 cup coconut oil). Place 20 drops of Certified Therapeutic Grade Frankincense* in the bottle. If you have access to ayurvedic herbs, you could also add some licorice root, Punarnava root (Boerhaavia difusa) and Manjistha root (Rubia cordifolia). Close the lid tight and shake.

And here's how to do your regular breast massage:

Every night, apply your balm liberally to your breasts and massage gently into the skin using circular motions. Your direction of pressure is to push fluid from your breasts toward your armpits. Remember to go bra-less for a while after you finish.

And here's how to check monthly for irregularities:

Do your regular monthly breast self-examination at the end of your period. If you are pregnant or no longer have periods, do at the same time each month.

Do your exam with dry fingers on dry breasts with no lotion or balm.

These folks explain the exam part way better than I could so please click this link and check it out
